Michael Cheng‍ ‍‍ ‍for KPFA LSB Vice Chair

I am Michael Cheng running for re-election as the KPFA LSB Vice Chair with KPFA Protector & Pacifica Forward Candidates.

I’m a retired scientist, and as climate emergencies escalate, our KPFA Protector and Pacifica Forward board members are helping all Pacifica stations to build strong relationships with earth conscious, environmentally sustaining movements.
I work with others to protect KPFA—a vital FCC Emergency alert station. The transmitters are backed up by generators during power failures, with booster transmissions across KPFA’s wide Northern California signal range. As the only Pacifica station with a full news department, KPFA keeps people informed during fires, floods, earthquakes and power outages about evacuations, resource centers, and news. KPFA also provides special coverage of how climate emergencies are affecting vulnerable communities.

I presented information to the Berkeley Landmark Commission to help make the KPFA building a Historic Landmark to safeguard KPFA as an independent media resource for future generations.

I am a past Secretary of the Pacifica Governance Committee helping to implement the Pacifica 2025 Bylaws. The bylaws transition is now helping Local Station Boards to focus on outreach, fund raising, and community needs assessment. As Vice Chair I can help our board to keep KPFA strong and growing by organizing our work to build membership, recruit interns, host events and support vital programming through new community connections.
Lastly, but most importantly, KPFA exercises editorial freedom because it is supported only by listeners; we have to protect this, I, therefore strongly oppose commercial underwriting.
